Homecoming Neighborhood Party

Wilsonville High School’s annual Homecoming parade and march through Meadows Loop has become a yearly staple and a nostalgic reminder that despite our growth we still live in a close-knit community. Every year since WHS’ inception in 1995 students partake in a friendly class competition. Which class has built the best float? Half-time at the 7 pm football game will crown the ultimate winner.

This year Larisa & Ben Byers (white house on corner of Meadows Loop and Glenwood Drive) are carrying on the tradition of previous owners and have graciously offered to host our pre-Homecoming party. The Byers family will provide homemade chili and have tables set-up in their garage for neighbors to bring anything they’d like to share (pizza, dessert, chips, etc).
Just be sure to RSVP by October 10th so they have enough chili on hand!

Following a decades long tradition, floats carrying Wilsonville High students will depart the main high school parking lot at 5 pm. They will then cross Wilsonville Road and wind through our neighborhood, likely showering onlookers with candy from their decorated trailers. A firetruck and police car with sirens and lights will likely be leading the contingent.

Savvy youngsters will bring bags to load up on trailer-tossed candy — a pre-Halloween trial run some say.

Rain or shine, most parade-goers sport the Wildcat colors of navy, white or silver and are welcome to walk over to the football stadium afterward to root on our hometown team.

Brick Wall Pressure Washed & Sealed

Under sunny skies in September Marquee Masonry pressure washed the brick wall facing Wilsonville Road and Meadows Parkway.  Earlier this October they came back and applied a clear waterproof sealant to help further protect the wall for years to come. Pressure washing and sealant will likely be a maintenance routine carried out every 4-6 years.

In the early Spring Marquee will be replacing several sections of wall as well as columns that have settled and cracked which will ensure the wall remains structurally sound for years to come.

Halloween Hits the Hood

Spooky season has begun! Homes around the neighborhood are popping up each day with a festive variety of Halloween decor including orange & purple lights, lit-up pumpkins, graveyards, gobblins, ghosts, witches, giant spider webs, a costumed sasquatch and even 12-foot skeletons.  Be sure to check out the local Haunted House on Wagner Street in Landover, flyer image is below with times/dates.

With Halloween falling on a Tuesday this year, be prepared for trick-or-treaters early and watch out for the little ones excitedly running around the neighborhoood.

Some homes will also likely “get boo’d.” It’s when someone anonymously drops off a treat on a friend or neighbor’s porch with a note that says “You’ve been boo’d.” Sometimes this kickstarts a slew of neighbors ‘booing’ other neighbors.

Boeckman Creek Road & Trail Update

Very soon the Boeckman dip will be closed for the next 12-15 months. If you would like to stay up-to-date on the project and road closures, text BOECKMAN to 866-935-0125 for alerts.

To be involved or simply to stay up-to-speed on what is happening on the trail work for our neighborhood please email Stephanie Tharpe  — wmboecitz@gmail.com.

Kim Fitzke Retires from HOA Board

At the September board meeting long-time resident and HOA board member Kim Fitzke tendered her resignation.  Kim — volunteered by her husband John years ago  — served faithfully for 8 years in a variety of roles including secretary and president. We will miss her greatly. And we are hoping down the road to be able to recruit her expertise on future committees after she has had a chance to take some much needed vacation time! If you spot Kim out and about feel free to thank her service to our community. Eight years is a milestone to serve on an HOA board!

Joe Maybee Joins the HOA Board

Fortunately, long-time resident & original owner - Joe Maybee happened to be attending the September HOA meeting and graciously offered to join the board on-the-spot. Seizing on this fortuitous event, the board locked Joe down on the spot. He was nominated and confirmed in one swoop.

Joe and his wife Jan, both engineers had their home on Sandalwood built and moved in March of 1993, the same day the “Spring Break Quake” hit. Luckily for the Maybees no damage! Their daughters Julie and Annie grew up in the neighborhood, attended and graduated from Wilsonville schools. Jan is an avid gardener and has turned their backyard into a private eden. Before retirement Joe spent his career as a firmware engineer. Co-authoring a book on software programming he spent nearly 15 years teaching software engineering and computer science classes at Portland State and St. Martin’s College. When Joe wasn’t busy with engineering he served as a volunteer for the City of Wilsonvill’s Planning commission.

Neighborhood Mailboxes

Mailboxes will be discussed during the upcoming board meeting October 18th. If you are unable to attend but have feedback, please email us at wmhoacommunity@gmail.com.

Here are some data points to consider:

  • The Post Office does not cover the expense of new mail box units.

  • The Landover neighborhood next door to us is 10 years newer. Landover’s HOA replaced their 13 units for $23,000 in 2022. Landover has 111 homes versus our 309.

  • A couple of units on Cascade Loop were broken into and damaged beyond repair several years ago and replaced by homeowners at their expense.

  • One of the mail carriers in early October said the following about our mailbox units:

—most decrepit/rusty boxes in our town
    — easy to pry backs open with a screwdriver or crowbar
    — most are rusty inside
    — there are a couple dozen units where mail gets damp or wet if left inside a
resident’s box for any amount of time.
    —  due to their age (25-33 years old), many parts are no longer available.

  • What about a one-time special assessment? A possibility — we would need 232 homes / 75%  to approve a special assessment.

  • Last Spring homeowner Clayton Alvarenga catalogued all the mailboxes, taking pictures of each. Click here to see images of all the mailboxes!

  • Rick Wallace has assembled several quotes and done some research for us to discuss at the October 18th meeting.

Wilsonville Spokesman, March 1990

Look Back in Time, March 1990

In the Wednesday, March 1,1990 edition of the Wilsonville Spokesman the article below appeared. Wilsonville Meadows was a $100 million, 144-acre mixed residential with apartments project.

Did you know originally Randall Construction tried to do a land exchange/swap with the West Linn/Wilsonville School District so that Boeckman Creek Elementary would have been built across the street from Wilsonville High (where the apartment complexes are now)? After some back-and-forth, the land swap fell through because the school district opted to keep Boeckman Creek where it was originally intended.
